The Twins First Time in the Pool

The twins went to the pool for the first time recently. My parents stayed over so they could babysit for a little while and then spend the next day with us for Father's Day. The plan was to get them ready and out the door after their morning feeding so we could get them outside early since we live in FL where it's Africa hot all the time. We took them to our community pool with their little SPF swim outfits and swim diapers on (that we got from Target). I had researched a ton of different swim floats to find the best ones that also provided shade. We wound up ordering two on Amazon that had the highest ratings and canopies over them to block the sun. One pink and one blue...

I covered any exposed skin with nontoxic kids sunblock and had little sun hats on them. (Although I think I am going to look into getting long sleeve tops for next time). They are just SO pasty white I was paranoid the whole time about them getting burned.

The pool was empty, which was awesome. We slowly carried them in the water, which was a little colder than I would have liked but not too bad, and carefully started dipping their legs in the water going a little further in each time. Once they were acclimated to the water we got them situated in their floats.

Riley was instantly all smiles. She kicked her feet underwater and splashed her hands. My dad would take his hand and splash the water in front of her and then she would mimic him and do the same. It was pretty amazing to watch. She absolutely loved it!

River was a bit more uneasy, as he is with most things. He didn't fuss much, but he looked a bit nervous and unsure about the whole thing at first. But when I grabbed hold of his legs under the water and started making fun noises and kicking his legs so he can see that it's safe and fun. Before long he was smiling and laughing and having a blast!

After a little while we took them out of the floats and held them in the water, swishing them around to give them a different experience. We only kept them in the pool for a half hour, as we didn't want to risk them getting a sunburn or shriveling up into a prune. We stripped off their bathing suits and put them in their car seats with just a dry diaper and before we even put the car in drive they were out like a light!

Looks like we have two little water bugs! Can't wait to take them again. I only wish I could do it more often but I'm not sure I could handle taking two babies myself during the week so we will have to wait for the weekends for now. Looking forward to our next trip to the pool!

Tummy Time Super Play Mat

Since we have been doing a lot of tummy time working on the babies' strength and trying to get them where they need to be developmentally, I went on a hunt for a better solution to laying a blanket down on the floor. We have activity mats, but I really wanted something that the twins could be on together. Earlier this week I found this awesome giant tummy time mat on Amazon (I buy just about everything from there). The mat is huge and has 8 different sensory things on it, wipes up clean super easy, and folds up with handles for travel which will definitely make visiting people a lot easier. Anytime I bring them to somebody's house I feel like I'm moving in! It's a pain to carry around the big activity mat with the dangling toys. This sucker folds up into a square that I can stick in a bag with their toys! Love it and the babies do too!!

Jolly Jumper

Back when I was pregnant and researching like crazy I had found out that walkers and exersaucers are bad for babies' development and can lead to hip dysplasia. So I began searching for options that were specifically created with that in mind and wouldn't hinder the twins' development in any way. That's when I came across the Jolly Jumper exerciser. It was scientifically designed similarly to a surgical support brace. So we opted to go with that one and really liked that it came with a stand instead of having to hang it from a doorway. Even though it is a better option than other jumper type contraptions, I still won't put the twins in it for any long periods of time. Just for like 10 minutes a day for them to have fun and burn off some energy...

This week I decided to check the box to see when we could start using it and saw it says: 3+months. That's now! That's past now!! So G immediately put it up in the living room. I am happy to say the twins LOVE it! I mean LOVE LOVE it. It took them a few (hilarious) tries to get it, and while they still haven't mastered it, they are definitely learning to bounce. And it is SO funny!! They both do slightly different things in it, but each have just as much fun in it! So glad we got this jumper. The only thing is... I think we're going to need two! Sure, right now it is fine that they take turns in it, but as they get a little bigger I think it would be so cool to have them bouncing next to each other. So perhaps I just want it for the cuteness factor of having them jump together, but so what. They are my biggest source of entertainment lately! LOL. Plus I love seeing them so happy and amazed when they are in it.

This was the twins first attempt at the jumper. They weren't quite sure what to do, but they sure had fun being in it! The funniest thing is when the video switches to Riley. Our laughing startles her and she jumps a few times, it's hilarious!

River & Riley's First Time in The Jolly Jumper

Riley looks like a wild west character the way her legs hang out. She is still getting the hang of it and gets better each day. Here she is sort of tap dancing rather than jumping!

Jolly Jumping Riley

Happy 7 Month Birthday!!!!

A big Happy Birthday shout out to the Super Twins!! They are SEVEN months today!!! I can't believe it!

Sadly they had their shots today (and not the fun kind!). But they sure have grown this week. River is 14lbs 11.5oz and 25 inches long! Riley is 14lbs 8oz and 24.5 inches! They were so alert for their appointment, they were watching everything the doctor was doing and each other when it wasn't their turn. Riv kept flashing his usual charming smile and when the Dr went to turn Riley over she rolled herself and popped up on her elbows like she does for tummy time! Too cute. These two have quite the personalities. Can't wait to see how they unfold!

Happy Birthday, sweet babies!!!

5 Months Since Homecoming

I just realized that as of yesterday it's been 5 months since we took the twins home from the NICU on Christmas Day. River was still only 5 pounds and Riley was a teeny thing at 3lbs 15oz. Now they are both close to 14 pounds each! Their journey, thus far, has been nothing short of amazing...

I put the pics of them coming home in their car seat next to ones we took today. I made sure the seats in the pics are the same size as the comparison one. I can't believe they were so tiny when we brought them home!! :-O

Life as a Mommy

It's been over six months since I became a Mommy and I already feel like I've learned so much. I've truly grown as a person. Because of the twins I hold my behavior to the highest standard and continually strive to be the very best version of myself. I have more patience than I never had before. I find joy in the simplest of things. I can function pretty darn well on very little sleep. It's like I've been reprogrammed as a stronger, more efficient human being. And surprisingly, while my days are probably more taxing than ever before, I am less stressed.

I've learned new ways to have fun. Something as simple as hearing the twins giggle can make my whole day. Going out dancing has been replaced with bopping around the house entertaining the babies with their favorite, "The Mommy Show." I spend most of the day on the floor playing with them and doing their exercises to help them develop and grow strong. My idea of a relaxing read takes place in the middle of the night after they've been fed and are sitting upright for a bit due to reflux, and it's usually articles about parenting and child development.

I've learned that you can't really nap when they nap. In those few precious moments they sleep during the day, that's when I scramble to sterilize and prep bottles, clean the house, and tackle the never-ending piles of laundry.

I've learned that I will no longer come first when it comes to anything. Showering is a luxury that usually has to wait until hubby gets home and dinner has been made. I've gone days without brushing my hair, but it's okay as long as the twins are clean, fed and happy. Their happiness & health = mine.

I've learned to not be so easily grossed out. I used to look at babies and shiver to think about changing diapers and wiping drool. Now it's not a day if I don't get thrown up on, poop on my hands, or drool on my face (not my own!). Hell, over the past few days alone I've been puked on. Twice. Like Projectile vomit down my bra. Drooled on to the point of being soaked. Had diarrhea shoot out at me and all over the changing table and blankets. And my neck peed on. I'm officially a burp cloth/diaper hybrid. I frequently smell butts and get excited when the babies have a normal poop. I pick noses, suck out snot, clean pacifiers with my mouth, and occasionally have to use my hand to wipe spit up. Not only am I not grossed out, I love every minute of it!

I've learned to multitask like never before. For me that word used to mean walking and texting at the same time or having a dozen tabs open on my computer. Now multitasking is more like prepping dinner and sterilizing bottles while holding a baby. Or feeding two suddenly super cranky, hungry babies at once. Or doing lunges and squats while folding laundry. Or, in this case, writing a blog post with one hand on my phone while feeding a baby in the middle of the night!

I've learned to be more organized. When you're suddenly responsible for twice the amount of people there's a whole lot more stuff to keep track of. When I bring the babies over to someone's house it looks like we're moving in! I've also learned not to be so hard on myself when things get a bit disorganized at times or when I don't get as much done as I would have liked. Whereas I used to make a list of chores to get done for the DAY I've come to realize it's more likely going to take a WEEK to get through.

I've learned to be a better wife. Since the babies arrived, my hubby has stepped up to the plate more than I ever could have ever dreamed possible. He has been completely hands on with the twins since we had them and takes pride in being a good father. He devotes his free time to playing with them even when he's had a long day at work and feeds them during the night on weekends so I can get some sleep. He's truly been wonderful. I know not all men are like that so I am incredibly grateful to have such an amazing husband & father to the twins. And because of this I am so appreciative for all he does that I try to let it show in everything I do. From cooking, to cleaning and being the best wife and mommy I possibly can. Which, in turn, has made him appreciate me even more. We no longer sweat the small stuff and look at everything in more of a "bigger picture" kind of way. Becoming a Mommy has change me for the better, making me a softer, more patient and nurturing wife. The days can seem long when it's just me and the twins and we only get a small window of time with Daddy. I cherish those few short hours like a precious gem.

Having the twins has changed my life, and myself as a person. Like a caterpillar to a butterfly, when they were born it's like I shed my former self and emerged someone completely different. Ready to spread my wings and fly into my new role and wrap them around my family to protect them. It was as if all past wrongs were suddenly made right and I was at once made whole. Complete. At peace. Each day since has been one learning experience after another, filled with more love, joy and poopy diapers than I could have ever imagined. And for that, I am truly grateful.

First Time Getting Sick

Well, it finally happened. The poor little twins are sick. It started on Monday with Riv looking a bit pastier than usual. That and a runny eye. I didn't think much of it at first because with me having terrible allergies, I think he takes after me as he tends to get sneezy/runny from time to time, especially when we go outside. But couple that with him being a bit less smiley than usual and napping more throughout the day and I knew something was off. He started to sound a little congested by the end of the day. I checked and he didn't have a fever so I just kept an eye on him. Riley on the other hand had NO symptoms of any kind and was her usual bright and cheery self all morning. She was a bit fussy at her development appointment and napped longer than usual, but I figured she was just tired. But when I picked her up to hold her later in the afternoon she felt super hot. They both tend to feel like a mini furnace and it's happened before where I think they feel hot then take their temps only to find they are normal. So you can imagine my surprise when this time the thermometer flashed red at 102! I took it 2 more times just to be sure. Not good!

So I called triage at the pediatrician's office and relayed what was going on and they told me not to worry, that she didn't need to go in just yet. She explained that they don't necessarily look at the numbers anymore with a fever, they are more concerned about behavior. It is more of a problem for a baby with only 100 degree temp who is limp and lifeless, not eating or producing way diapers than it is a baby with a higher temp and no changes in normal behavior patterns. So that made me feel a lot better. They told me if anything changes, we can always come in first thing in the morning.

Both babies went to sleep early that night. About two hours later, Riley woke up babbling like she never has before. She wasn't crying, she was yakking away as if she was trying to tell us something wasn't right. She felt like she was on fire, and sure enough her fever was back with a vengeance. When the thermometer flashed red "103.5" my first instinct was to panic. But I didn't. We brought her in the living room, gave her infant acetaminophen (we use Little Remedies brand instead of Tylenol, as it has no artificial additives or dyes) and stripped her sleeper off. We sat her in her Boppy pillow between us and put cool rags all over her. Before long she stopped her strange babbling and began smiling and giggling at the things we were doing to distract her.

Have you ever seen anyone with a fever look so darn cute and happy??

In the meantime I started researching like crazy. I found a lot if interesting information that really helped us remain calm and collected. For one, the old theory that a high fever (once it hits 104) cooks your brain was apparently debunked in recent years. In fact, fevers are now considered a "good" thing in that it's the body's natural way of killing off whatever bacterial/viral thing that's attacking their body and it is not recommended to go to Dr or hospital with a high fever unless it is accompanied by certain symptoms, the baby is under 3 months, or medicine/cool rags don't bring the fever down. Here are the guidelines they have now to follow:

Normal temperature – 97 to 99 degrees (36 to 37.2 Celcius).

Low-grade fever – 99 to 100.9 degrees (37.3 to 38.3 Celcius).

Common fever – 101 to 103.5 degrees (38.4 to 39.7 Celcius).

High fever – any fever over 103.6 degrees (39.8 Celcius).

Everything I read also stated that a fever between 101-103.5 that goes down with medicine is usually caused by something viral. So it would appear that whatever was going on with the twins was more than likely that.

For about 90 minutes we periodically checked her temp until it came down to 101.5. We then put her back to bed and continued to check whenever she was awake. By morning hers was down to 99.9 and Riv's was up to the same. You could tell just by looking at them (more so on River with his watery eye and pale color) that they weren't feeling their best. They napped throughout the day and were asleep more than awake (which was good for them to rest AND for mommy to get some chores done!). By this morning both of their fevers were gone and they were back to their smiley, happy selves. I think they were still fighting off the last of it all day as they slept off and on and weren't quite ready to go back to doing a lot of tummy time and exercises (But who can blame them!). Riley even took a 4.5 hour nap in the afternoon, which for her is very unusual considering she normally only takes cat naps throughout the day. So she really must have needed it. I feel like that's the time their bodies are healing. I do think the extra vitamins and supplements I add to their bottles has helped them fight the sickness quicker. In one of their bottles each day I put a liquid vitamin (with no artificial additives or dyes), infant probiotic and essential fatty acids (half a capsule). Here's a pic of each thing...

(Here's what's in that last one...)

Even though the slept a lot, they woke up more frequently throughout the night to feed and were a bit off schedule so I'm a bit exhausted but I guess that's just a day in the life of a Mommy! Anything for them to help them feel better. It's terrible seeing them not feeling well. We went to a huge outdoor event over the weekend (I was performing with my dance group there) and it was really crowded. We were very careful and protective but I guess when these a lot of people around you can't always block everything that's airborne. But as even the doctor has said, they are now at the point where they are bound to get sick occasionally and it's okay, it's how they build up their immunity. Still sucks to see them suffer!
I feel like I handled it all pretty well and did a good job of not flipping out when I easily could have. Everything has been a learning experience and now I feel I'm even better equipped for whenever they get sick again, which I'm sure will happen many more times throughout their lives!

Happy 6th Month Birthday!!

I can't believe the twins are 6 months old already! A half a year?!? No way it feels that long. Time is going by way too quickly! And I can only imagine it's just going to keep flying by at lightening speed.

The Twins have grown so much in so many ways in such a short time. It's truly amazing to see their progress, which advances on a daily basis. In the matter of ONE day they go from not knowing how to do something to doing it all the time! For example, when they had their development evaluation neither of them were able to hold anything. When I found out it was something they should be able to do at this point I went home and worker on it with them and in only a few hours they had it figured out.

We had a few appointments for River's physical therapy where I learned some new tricks and ways to play with the babies along with exercises and stretches. It was mainly for Riv's Torticollis (stiff neck) but could be used interchangeably with Riley too, as she needs to gain some neck strength. So again, as soon as I went home after the first appointment I began working diligently with them to help move their development along and improve their strength. I learned a lot! Like Tummy Time doesn't just have to be done on their tummies. Right?!? I was amazed too! Just by holding them upright -or any position where they have to hold their heads up without support- counts for tummy time! Of course they still need to do SOME of it on their bellies to work their back muscles. But adding this to the mix (which we already were sitting them upright) really helped with having different positions to put them in to keep it fresh. Sometimes we lay them across our laps on their tummies or find other creative ways...

So I've been keeping the babies steadily active throughout the day (which definitely tires them AND Mommy out!) and it's apparently paid off! Here it is only a few weeks later from our first physical therapy appointment and Riv's latest evaluation the therapist said his Torticollis is gone!! Completely undetectable! Yay!!! Makes me feel so good to know I'm really making a difference.

About two weeks ago they learned how to hold things we put in their hands, now they are reaching for and playing with toys while on their tummy time pillow.

It's remarkable how fast they learn. River is definitely a little ahead of Riley, but she is leaps and bounds further than she was. He's a bit stronger and a lot more social. But she's getting there. And some of that may very well be personality. We shall see! It's fascinating to see them mold and change and become, well, little humans. That G and I CREATED... Still blows our minds!!!

They are also getting better at holding things with both hands!

Meanwhile Riley has been drooling like crazy...

And loves looking in the mirror...

And is actually playing with toys during tummy time!

River is still a charmer with that smile. He loves to kick things that hang from his activity mat and is getting quite good at picking up/holding toys...

And on occasion I can get him to actually giggle and it is the best sound in the world!

They are when holding their heads up better in their bath tub!

We fall in love with these two more and more every day. They are wonderfully exhausting and make me always be the best version of myself. I couldn't imagine life without them and look forward to all the exciting things to come!

Music with Mar.

Lately I've been looking into mommy and me type programs that the babies can go to once they're able to sit up on their own or even possibly sooner. I recently learned of a Mommy and Me type program called "Music by Mar" in our area and that it was free to infants under eight months so I looked into it. I found out they have one pretty close to our house and so I spoke with the lady who runs that location. She explained to me what it was all about and so I was really interested. Here is some info to explain what the program is about:

What makes “Music with Mar.” different?

Whereas some music classes focus on teaching to the little musician, Music with Mar. classes teach to the whole child using music. The child’s music abilities can be nurtured along with motor, social, language, safety and cognitive skills. A good music foundation for later on as well as an all around good academic foundation is laid out through the use of well thought out lyrics and movements.

Music with Mar. is a class where a caregiver and a child participate together in musical activities which enhance the four main areas of development-cognitive, social, motor and language.  (THE ADULT attending MUST be able to participate with the child for the child to get the full benefit of the program.)    A good music foundation, as well as an all around good academic foundation, is laid through the use of well thought out lyrics and movements.

Music with Mar. classes:

focus on the total development of the child, and not on musicality
know that children learn best through play and activation of many senses provide an environment where the parent and child are comfortable help children start to understand how to behave in this setting.

You know anything having to do with development and I'm sold! So this past Monday we tried it out! I came up with a way to bring both babies not need an extra hand. I brought that two Boppy pillows and stacked them next to me one on top of the of the other so I could put one of the baby is in the middle and they were able to sit upright easily with support. It worked brilliantly!

There was about 15 people there with their kids ranging from ages 8 months to 2 years. Obviously they were all regulars as they knew all the songs. Apparently they do most of the same things each class and change up a little in the middle. A friend of mine brought her 2 month old and all three of our babies were wide eyed the entire time. Between the music, the people, the props, it was a lot of commotion so their brains must have been going haywire! In the beginning the instructor went around the room with a frog puppet singing a song where the frog says their name and each kid would respond in song as well. When they went up to River he looked terrified with a look of worry and a single tear running down his cheek. And he was the one sitting on my lap! I had flash forwards of him being afraid of Disney characters. When it was Riley's turn she was wide eyed with a huge smile on her face. So cute! My friend's baby seemed to like it too!

They brought out different things for kids and parents to play with for each song. One had us hitting sticks on each syllable of all the kids around the room. We marched with bell bracelets and danced in our seats moving the babies' arms and legs to the beat. While it was a little advanced for where the twins are at developmentally, I still think it is a valuable experience for them. Something new to make connections in their growing brains. So I'll definitely go back again. :-)

Here is the link to the company if you are interested in seeing if they have any classes in your area:

Development Evaluation

Recently the twins had their development evaluation. It is run through the federally funded Early Steps program and is a free service that the babies qualify for due to their low birth weight. It went pretty much as we expected and we are delighted that they will have extra help to bring any developmental delays up to speed.

I have to say we were pretty impressed with the facility itself. When you walk in it's like you are instantly transported to a magical world which was their waiting room.

When it was time for their evaluation they were brought into separate rooms. I went with River and G took Riley. They had two evaluators each and one other person took notes. When I walked in the room with Riv, the first thing he did was flash his larger-than-life smile at one of the evaluators. She smiled back and said, "well we can check that one off the list!"  They proceeded to play with him, making noises, ringing bells, changing his position all to see his reactions. They shut the lights and held a penlight in front of his face to see if he'd track it with his eyes. I had a feeling he might not do well with this one due to his torticollis (stiff neck) - which he has an upcoming physical therapy appt. he would follow the light on one side then stop at the midline point. He's able to turn his neck to the left, it's just a preference not to. They waved toys at him and tried to put things in his hands but I knew he wouldn't hold anything, as he hasn't been doing that yet. Overall he seemed to do pretty well.

When the evaluation was finished, I left the room with River to meet G and Riley back in the waiting room while they put the scores together. I found out from him that Ri girl didn't do so well. She was apparently super fussy and cried a lot, which surprised me as she's generally not like that, and I guess she didn't track at all. But as soon as he set her in the car seat she fell asleep so she must have been cranky. Hey, if I was tired and someone flashed lights in my eyes, flipped me around and made loud noises near my ears I'd probably cry too! LOL. I wasn't too concerned with it though. This wasn't the SATs for Riley to get into college. I already assumed she'd be assigned some kind of developmental help and as an educator I am all for that!

After about twenty minutes they brought us all back in a room with all six people that participated in their evals. They went on to explain the scoring process and that there was a bell curve range of 80-110. They gave us the scores for both their gestational age and corrected age and said they'd like them to fall somewhere in the middle. With some things they were above level (Riv scored off the charts for Social), some were on level and some below. We didn't realize they were supposed to be grabbing/holding things already. So that was one thing they needed to work on. Individually, River needs physical therapy for his neck and it was recommended that Riley meets with an Early Intervention Specialist to work on work on her neck strength, social skills and ensure she hits her milestones. Their thought was that by each of them getting one service, it will ultimately help both of them since what we learn to do for one we can do for the other and vice versa. Each specialist will come out once a week. Their philosophy is heavily based on parent education, meaning they show the parents what to do at home to most benefit the babies' development.

So all in all we were happy to have had the evaluation and grateful they'll get free services that will enhance their development and help give me ideas and the tools needed to reinforce what I already do with them each day. I'm actually looking forward to getting some new ammo for my arsenal of daily activities! Anything to help the twins get the most out of their days!

Emerging Personalities

A few months ago I wrote a post about the personalities of each twin. I plan to keep doing this from time to time to reflect on how the twins' personalities have changed or stayed the same. Amazingly enough, in only two short months their personalities have certainly changed. It's all so fascinating to watch unfold!

With River, it seemed the first 6 to 8 weeks was tough for him. He was frequently upset and would act like you were sawing his legs off when changing his diaper. He was quite jumpy and startled easily. He cried over just about anything. We joked that we could envision a ski trip years from now where he'd be at the top of the mountain crying that he was too cold and didn't want to go down the hill. LOL. The kind of kid sobbing "where's my inhaler!" every five minutes. (Of course we said this jokingly but with love).

Well here we are two months later and Riv has really changed! He is the happiest, sweetest little man. The little ray of sunshine smiles at us from the moment he wakes up until we say goodnight. And it's a smile that melts your heart like ice cream on a hot day! And to top it off, he's starting to giggle now! OMG I can't take it!! Something tells us he's going to be a real charmer. He's super lovey and affectionate and will fall asleep with his arms wrapped around anyone he feels safe with.

His eyes keep on getting bluer by the day. They have lightened up so much and are definitely not the slate gray that all babies have when they're born. I didn't think the color changed this quickly so I'm not sure what to expect if they will stay like this or continue getting lighter. Guess we'll find out!

He's also been chatting up a storm lately! He babbles at us back and forth like we're having a conversation! His oohs and aahs are getting longer and more complex. It's so cool to hear! He'll even start talking when we read to him in the daytime. :-D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAYkS9Kx3VQ

One thing we can say about River is that he's a total mama's boy! Like to the point that it's funny. Case in point, we'll be going on our walk around the neighborhood and if G is pushing the stroller and I'm walking next to it Riv will stare deadpan at my face the entire time without looking around it anything else. It's almost as if he thinks if he turns his head I'll disappear. If someone is holding him and I walk into the room, once he hears my voice he's doing everything he can to turn his head around so he can see me. It's actually pretty flattering. I won't lie, I love it and just eat it up!

River recently has figured out how to flip himself over from his tummy to his back. He works at it a bit and finally throws his leg far enough that he rolls over! And he has mastered the art of batting at hanging toys like Animal from the Muppets. When he's in the mood he'll go to town hitting two toys at once while doing his favorite current activity, pushing things with his legs. In that case he pushes on one of squishy bars that arch around the top of the activity mat. He does it on me all the time when he's in a Boppy pillow next to me on the couch. I recently started facing the twins toward each other in them so they can push on each other's legs!

He does still cry when something is wrong, but not without reason like before with getting his diaper changed. I can actually decipher what's wrong by the different cries he has. He gets whiny when he's overtired; he gets progressively louder when he's hungry; he goes from zero to hysterical when he's hurting; and if he gets scared (shots, etc...) he let's out a short scream then goes silent and holds his breath while turning beat red. Yeah that's fun! :-/

But I feel a strong connection with him. Like we've built a bond. He trusts me with his life. And that's ultimately what G and I think changed him. Everything was so new to him at first and he was terrified. Now he knows the drill. He knows his needs will always be met by Mommy and Daddy and we shower him with love and affection. He feels secure. And we feel so good as parents to have fostered that sense of security. We work hard at it and love every second of it!

On to Riley girl. She has changed a lot as well. Where we initially pegged her as carefree, smiley and content we now see a more mysterious and curious side of her. She looks at things wide-eyed and full of wonder and never shows any sign of being afraid of her surroundings. She's too busy being fascinated with everything. She loves being outside and looking at nature. Every day we sit out back with them when G gets home and she stares up at the trees and the sky. So much so that she arches her back and pushes on us until she can look straight up. And she just stares and stares, eyes wide as saucers in awe.

Sometimes we can make her smile by dancing around, making silly noises, kissing her all over. But sometimes she won't crack even the slightest grin at our playfulness but then look up at the fan directly behind us and smile big. It's both funny and frustrating at the same time! She has a feistiness about her that shines through and leads us to believe she's going to be a sassy little girl! She's on the quiet side and doesn't cry much, but when she wants something she definitely lets us know! She pretty much only has two types of cries. One is when she's REALLY upset she'll let out these blood curdling screams that could shatter glass. (Again think getting shots). The other is more of a yelp than a cry. Because it's not sobbing, it sounds more like she's yelling "hey" progressively louder until you go to her. In a way she seems to already be somewhat of an introvert if that's possible. Seeing things from her like silent tears, not babbling much, rarely crying out and even clawing at her face when she's upset rather than vocalizing it gives that impression but of course it's too early to know for sure.

Riley is definitely daddy's girl. While there are times that she's specifically looking to me for comfort, a lot of the time she follows G with her eyes when he's waking around the house. But she adored him before she was even born, as she would kick like crazy whenever he'd get home from work and talk to my belly. We also wonder if our first kangaroo care session had anything to do with their particular attachments to each of us. I kangaroo'd Riv first and G had Riley. Interesting theory for sure...

She has a tendency to try and stare at the TV. I don't have it on all day, but Pandora is usually playing through Apple TV (I play diff genres of music every day for them) and it rotates random nature pictures on the screen while it's playing. She will do everything to crane her neck and stare at it so I'm constantly moving and turning her so she can't look. With all the recent studies out there that have found TV before the age of 3 -especially within the first year- causing brain damage, we are very cognizant of shielding them from it. But she loves anything with lights (including lights!) so naturally she's drawn to it. I'm going to start throwing a blanket over the TV during the day so I can still play music and not have to continually shift her around.

Little Miss Fiesty still scratching up her face even after I cut her nails! So we've been putting mittens on her at night and sometimes during the day unless we are holding her. Hopefully she'll stop that soon! I know she hates the mittens. She also has been constantly eating her hands lately! And not when she's hungry, we're talking anytime. Like a crazed cannibal desperate for a snack! She'll frantically try to shove her entire hand in her mouth, while flailing about like a fish out of water that ate a bag of cocaine! I've talked to other mommies with babies the same age that say their little one is doing the same, it's just weird that she's doing it and not River. Perhaps he'll be a vegetarian just like mommy? ;-)

Riley likes sitting on our laps facing outward so she can see everything but still feel protected by us. She is usually more intrigued by her surroundings than the people around her. Perhaps she'll be an explorer of sorts! When she is sleepy she gets a lot more lovey and will fall asleep face-to-chest on us and I savor every second of it, as it doesn't happen as frequently as I'd like. In those moments I don't want to move; I just want to feel her cuddled up to me as long as possible while it lasts.

Riley recently has a new friend. Sophie the giraffe, which is a popular nontoxic teething toy (and we have a book about Sophie that goes with it!!). Since she has been drooling and chewing on her hands lately - Riley, not Sophie! ;-) - I thought I might as well give it to her now just in case it's a sign she's on her way to teething (although 3 months corrected would be really early) and much to my surprise she loves it! It squeaks when you squeeze it, and every time it makes her smile. She's been holding it tucked under her arm and has been figuring out how to maneuver it near her mouth to suck/chew on it. It's pretty fun to watch her try!

Every day we try to give them as many developmental opportunities as possible. Currently their daily activities consist of tummy time, looking in a hand-held mirror, playing with hanging toys on their activity mats, having stories with big pictures read to them, some time with wrist rattles on, trips outside, having mommy sing songs & dance and be silly with them (aka "The Mommy Show" LOL), time in the Boppy pillows facing each other to push their legs on one another, and lately we've been trying to teach them how to hold things like hand rattles- which they are starting to hold for about 30 seconds to a minute at a time. So they are definitely in an active learning environment! I'm sure it's just going to keep getting more fun and exciting as they grow and change and are able to do even more!

Happy Five Months!!!

The Twins are FIVE months today!!! (3 months corrected). Boy does time fly!! River is 11lbs 11oz and Riley is 11lbs 5oz! She's catching up to her brother!! (And her legs are even chubbier than his!). They are such happy babies and smile all the time! We love these two little kiddos more than words can say!!!

Happy 5 Months, Super Babies!!!

Attempting to Sleep Through the Night

About two weeks ago, as per our pediatrician, we started added a bit of rice cereal to the last bottle of the night. I went out and got some organic stuff from Whole Foods and followed the doctor's instructions of putting one tablespoon of cereal per 4oz of formula (which for them is pretty much one per bottle). Well the first night poor Riv had a rough time. He woke up crying his head off six different times, from what seemed to be really bad reflux. I think it startled him awake and scared him. Poor little guy. They had eaten at an earlier time than usual (9:30) and wound up sleeping for 6 hours! Unfortunately we didn't go to bed until our usual after 11 time so I got the same amount of sleep as I usually do, but hey it was a good start!

I had talked to our pediatrician the next day (she had called for a separate reason) and mentioned how Riv did with the cereal. I told her I was going to try half the amount in his bottle that night to see if he does better and she was on board. So that night I did just that and he only woke up once crying but seemed okay the rest of the night. Once again they ate around 9:30 so they woke up around their usual 330am time for feeding. Good stretch of time, but still not doing us any good if we go to bed at our usual time.

Meanwhile Riv has had a constipation issue the past 2 weeks so we've been giving him a little plain water in his bottle once or twice a day and it helps, but the poor little guy is in excruciating pain when he finally goes and it's a hard little ball of poop so no wonder!

So now it's been two weeks and they seem to be handling the cereal at night a bit better using only half the recommended amount. Riley had some constipation issues but seems to be doing better. She appears to have a stronger stomach than her brother. Riv has been constipated the past two weeks, going every few days. He actually had a normal poop the other day so I'm hoping that continues. I hate seeing him in so much pain! They still aren't sleeping through the night though, which was the purpose of introducing the cereal. They are hungry at weird times and have been eating earlier at night (around 930) so they fall asleep a little earlier which still puts them at waking up in the middle of the night. There was ONE night we were up late and fed them at 1030... They stayed awake until close to midnight and then didn't wake up again until 6am. But that was the closest we've gotten. Sometimes only one of them wakes up hungry in the middle of the night (surprisingly it's usually Riley, that little girl likes to eat!) but then she wakes him up so I wind up feeding both. I'm hoping they continue to have longer stretches at night because while I'm used to having little sleep now, I really miss it! LOL.

Awaiting Aunt Flo

So it's been five months since I had the twins. Seems crazy it's been that long already. The doctor had told me since I'm not breastfeeding that I should get my period back 6-8 weeks after delivery, aaaand... Aunt Flo has yet to pop in for a visit. So I spoke with Dr T (the last RE I had seen- he was the one who tested me when I first had a BFP and later told me it was twins...we have since kept in touch). He reminded me that with Premature Ovarian Failure and Diminished Ovarian Reserve it doesn't mean you'll NEVER ovulate, it just means it will be rare and unpredictable. But considering I never got a period (even when I got pregnant that was the first time I ovulated since getting off birth control the year before. I had dropped two eggs and got pregnant and therefore my period never came). I figured I was back into my prior POF state with my cycle not coming back, but this time I had decided not to go on any supplements to try and get it back since I'm no longer trying to get prego. I've been checking my cervix every day just out of curiosity to see if there were any changes, and for the most part it's stayed the same. Well... last week something weird happened. I totally had that sticky egg white cervical mucus! There was no doubt about it, it was definitely it. Very interesting.

It's amazing what a difference one year can make. This time last year I was desperately trying to get my cycle back so I could get pregnant and now here I am with TWO babies wondering if I'll get my period. Well... It's been a week since the potential ovulation and I'm anxiously awaiting the Red Crusader. For the past week I've been feeling stuff stirring down there, as if it's warning me: it's coming. If I do actually get my period, my fear is it's going to be a doozy. It's been so many years since I've had one I imagine that it'll be a build up of all the times I didn't and just hit me like a tsunami. I warned G to stay on his toes in the event I really do get it, as he may have to hunker down in a safe place for there's a good chance I'll be a fire-breathing monster, smashing buildings and stepping on tourists....we do live in Orlando after all ;-)

My guess is if I'm going to be surfing the Crimson Tide, it will happen sometime in the next week or so. Right now all I can do is wait! In the meantime I'll stock up on chocolate and warn local law enforcement to stand guard....

(This is how I imagine it's going to be: {if you've never seen this SNL skit, it is HILARIOUS})
